COLUMBUS, Miss. (CMSD) - The next chapter in the history of R.E. Hunt School is written.
Columbus Municipal School District Board of Trustees and administration hosted a dedication ceremony on Thursday evening.
Alumni, community leaders, and educators walked through the historic doors of the school to reminiscence about good times with friends, while remembering the academic and athletic achievements of the Hornets.
The history of the once segregated school is also remembered. From 1953-1970 African-American students in Lowndes County went to Hunt High, making it a center piece of African-American history and culture in Columbus. A historical marker from the Mississippi Department of Archives and History was unveiled after the indoor ceremony.
A monument outside of the school was also revealed as part of the events.
Hunt, along with the R.E. Hunt Museum was heavily damaged in a February 2019 tornado. After years of repairs, fifth and sixth grade students returned to the building at the beginning of this school year.
