Superintendent's Student Council

COLUMBUS, Miss. (CMSD) - Academic programs, food, and athletics are what Columbus Municipal School District students want to know about in their schools.

The Superintendent’s Student Council continued in October.

This is the time Interim CMSD Superintendent Craig Chapman uses to hear directly from students in each school. This time allows students to share what they like and what they want to see changed.

“It’s helpful to hear the concerns of students. They have really good ideas. Much of what they asked for was incentive based. Meaning, if they have more academic achievements in the classroom, they could receive an incentive field trip or uniform pass day,” said Chapman.

While one request for a merry-go-round might not be possible, Chapman is encouraged by the thoughtful answers and questions from the students.

“These students are engaged and constantly looking in their school. Their opinions matter, because we want to create a great environment for them to continue their academic tracks and achievements,” said Chapman.

The young learners also heard from CMSD Child Nutrition Director Mia Johnson and CMSD Chief Financial Officer Holly Rogers, because many of their questions centered around buying things for the classroom and the food they eat each day in the cafeteria.

“Of course, we have rules and a budget we have to follow, but we want these children to have what they need in the classroom and a lot of what they want,” said Rogers.

Chapman plans to continue these meetings each month at the schools this school year.
