Homecoming Volunteer

COLUMBUS, Miss. (CMSD) – Homecoming is a time of celebration on the history of Columbus High and a glimpse into the future.

It’s one reason why Tiffany Jefferson works to make the event so special.

“I graduated in 2007, and being able to come back and give back to my community is amazing.  I love organizing Homecoming because it brings everyone together as one big family, whether you’re a Falcon, Bobcat, General, or Hunt High Hornet.

I also love organizing Homecoming because it allows our students to be valued and recognized as some of the best at CHS. It’s a chance for them to have fun, create unforgettable memories, and celebrate tradition. Homecoming is a time to show pride in Columbus High, and each year gets better. I’m grateful to work with an amazing team that keeps our school spirit alive!” said Jefferson.

It takes months of planning behind the scenes for the activities to come together.

Jefferson started working on this year’s theme, “Around the World… Falcon Nation,” last October, just after the last homecoming celebration.

“(Just) coordinating everything from the voting, assembly, parade, block parties and tailgate. I’m grateful for community helpers like Erin Hackman and Priscilla white who make these events possible.

I try to involve everyone, local businesses, schools, the school board, the city council, and anyone who wants to participate. Each year, we pick a theme that represents our school, and we work hard to create a production to showcase our students’ amazing talent. This year, our special dance, “The Baddest in the Room”, was a huge success (at the Homecoming Assembly) thanks to Coach Jessica Davis and all the students who performed.

None of this would be possible without an incredible team. Mrs. Keysha Morris handles the wardrobe, Marissa Hackler manages technology, and Ms. Chandra Steele cares for our elementary students. I strive to involve everyone across the district, from kindergarten through high school. It truly is a district-wide celebration,” explained Jefferson.

There are also people working behind the scenes to ensure everything goes smoothly and everyone has a great time.

“I love that homecoming sparks student confidence and strengthens the bond between our school and community,” said volunteer Chandra Steele.

“As an alumnus, being part of the homecoming committee is one of the best experiences! There’s nothing better than working with a special group of students to create something memorable while building school spirit. Once a Falcon, always a Falcon!” said volunteer Marissa Hackler.

“Being able to help Ms. Jefferson and work by her side has truly been an honor. I’m so grateful that she trusted me to bring her vision to life. Every second, every minute, every hour counted, and every late night of planning was worth it. I appreciate that Ms. Jefferson allowed me not only to coordinate but to support her every step of the way. She is a true leader and an inspiration, and it is my greatest honor to be her right-hand person. Every child deserves a light to help them shine. Homecoming is their moment, and I’m here to make sure it’s an unforgettable experience,” said volunteer Jessica Davis.

Jefferson has a passion to ensure every event showcases the Falcon spirit.

“A special thanks to our amazing students for allowing me to serve as your Homecoming sponsor! It’s been such a joy to watch your creativity, teamwork, and school spirit shine. Thank you for trusting me to be part of this unforgettable experience!  I also want to extend my heartfelt thanks to Dr. Andrews for his support and patience, and to Mr. Craig Chapman for believing in me and allowing me to give back to my community. Finally, I thank God for giving me the ideas and strength to keep going. Even when I felt like giving up, I prayed and pushed through because my purpose as the homecoming coordinator is to help create meaningful experiences that unite students, parents, alumni, and the community,” said Jefferson.

The annual fall activities are something each person in Columbus can be a part of, celebrate, and connect with old classmates. It also shows the younger generation how to stay connected.

“Homecoming is more than just a parade, a tailgate, or a dance. It is a celebration that brings our entire community together. For our students, it’s a time to show school pride, showcase their talents, and create lasting memories while learning the value of teamwork and tradition. For parents, it’s a chance to see their children shine, celebrate their efforts, and feel connected to the culture of our school. For our alumni, it’s a chance to return home, reconnect with familiar faces, and reflect on the traditions that shaped their journey. For our staff, it’s a moment to see the fruits of their hard work and dedication reflected in the smiles and successes of their students. Lastly, for our community, Homecoming is a reminder of our history, unity, and pride in Columbus Municipal Schools. It’s a moment where everyone, students, families, teachers, and local leaders can come together to honor achievement, creativity, and the bonds that make our school district truly amazing! I really enjoy working with the best and GREATEST school district in the world!” said Jefferson.
