Congratulations to the inaugural Junior Beta Club class at Stokes Beard Elementary! We celebrated and recognized these young scholars last night. Each student has to maintain at least an 80 in all subject areas, have good behavior, no more than five absences, and must be referred to be a member. "We are very proud of the students who met the criteria to be included in our inaugural BETA club," Stokes Beard Principal Dr. Jennings said. "We look forward to working with them to nurture their leadership skills. Go Stokes-Beard!" Shout out to our parents, community members, Beta Club Sponsor Mrs. Black, and guest speaker Dr. Angela Verdell for celebrating our Beta Club scholars! Congratulations, students! We're excited to watch you grow! #StudentCenterd #BetaClub #ExcellenceDriven

Student Spotlight! We want to highlight Columbus High senior Makiyah Burnett. Through McKellar's work-based learning program, Makiyah has been interning with Friendly City Books. As an intern, Makiyah helps stock and mail books, ensures the shelves are in order, sets up displays, helps decorate the store, and even reads and reviews new books. "We have really enjoyed having Makiyah at Friendly City Books this year," FCB owner Emily Liner said. "She has made a tangible impact expanding our used book section, and she's contributed her creativity to add some decorative flair around the bookstore. She has also had the opportunity to participate in our events and meet authors like Andy Harkness and Nyani Nkrumah, and she has a staff picks shelf alongside the rest of the team." Our work-based learning program helps high school students find their path to success after high school. After Makiyah graduates from CHS, she wants to study engineering and even build houses with 3D printers! Her love of reading, art, and design is what called her to intern with Friendly City Books and she said she's thankful for the opportunity and experience! We are proud of you, Makiyah and can't wait to see how you grow! #TogetherWeFly #StudentSpotlight #FalconProud

Shout out to Lt. Morris from Columbus Air Force Base for coming to visit our Columbus Middle School students! Our CMS students are seeing real-world connections every day. Lt. Morris spoke to ELA students about the Barrington Irving reading. Lt. Morris discussed the need for more pilots of color, how to obtain flight time to become a pilot, and college requirements. He explained the difference between commercial and military pilots. Lt. Morris, 26, graduated from Tuskegee University and encouraged students to think about attending an HBCU as well. Thank you Lt. Morris for answering our students' questions and being an amazing mentor and leader! #WeAreColumbus #TogetherWeFly #StudentCentered

VAPA Night was a HUGE success! Stars shine bright at CMSD. We are thankful to all the parents and community members for attending our VAPA night performances. For those who came, they enjoyed performances from our theatre classes, choir, CMS band, CHS band, and an art gallery. "The arts significantly boost student achievement, reduce discipline problems and increase the odds students will go on to graduate from college," former Secretary of Education Arne Duncan said. Thank you for supporting our students and art education! #FalconProud #ArtEducation #Artsed

Check out what's happening at The View! This is the first year for our Fairview Elementary School Student Council. For this month's service project, each class is raising canned goods to support those in need throughout the holidays. Student Council President Joyce Ayoola said she's excited to see the school become more involved in the community. "Feeding the people of the community is important and will help students get the education that not everyone has everything they need and these canned goods can really help," Joyce said. Let's continue to work together to lift up our community! Parents, community members, and volunteers: feel free to make any canned goods donations at The View, just ask to speak with our counselor Mrs. B. #TogetherWeFly #WeAreColumbus #FalconProud
