Meet the Superintendent

Dr. Craig Chapman is a visionary, transformational educational leader with extensive experience advancing student achievement, strengthening district systems, and building meaningful community partnerships. He currently serves as Superintendent for the Columbus Municipal School District, where he collaborates with the Board of Trustees to implement strategic initiatives, steward district resources, and ensure operational excellence. His leadership contributed to the successful passage of a $35 million bond referendum and significant improvements in district accountability.

We serve approximately 2,900 students, and we are committed to providing them with a high-quality education.

The success of the Columbus Municipal School District will depend upon the teachers, administrators, and support staff working hard in a unified and professional manner to improve student achievement. We are committed to providing a rigorous curriculum designed to challenge students across a broad spectrum of content areas.

Our work ethic, commitment, and belief that our students are capable of achieving at high levels will set the standard of excellence for the Columbus Municipal School District.

As a district, we are committed to making every decision in the best interest of students. We expect them to perform well academically, behave properly, and we are devoted to preparing them to become civic-minded, productive citizens of our community.

We welcome new families to our area, and we thank everyone in the Columbus community for their commitment to continuous improvement in pursuit of student success.

Dr. Chapman has led multi-million-dollar construction projects, overseen transportation, child nutrition, safety, and compliance, and served as a key liaison between the district and community, higher education, and civic organizations to expand post-secondary pathways for students. He previously served as Interim Superintendent, Assistant Superintendent of Operations, and Principal of Columbus High School, where he led academic innovation, increased graduation rates, and guided the school through the COVID-19 pandemic. Dr. Chapman holds advanced degrees in educational leadership and curriculum and instruction from various institutions and a Doctorate in Educational Leadership (P–12) from Mississippi State University.
