For Your Information

Sale Elementary School sits on a ten acre wooded lot in East Columbus next to the Columbus High School athletic complex.  The original building was erected in 1968.  Six classrooms were added in 1990.  The school serves children who live in the city limits of Columbus. A lottery system based on parent choice is used district wide to place the students.
The school has eighteen classrooms for regular classes, music, physical education, art, S.P.I.R.I.T., Special Education, counseling, library, speech, and Title I support.  The entire building is air conditioned.  Hot breakfast and lunch are served daily.  Twelve of the eighteen classrooms have their own rest room.

Special Programs and Services

  • Assistant Teachers--Each kindergarten and first  grade has the services of an assistant teacher.   The assistant teacher works under the direction of the classroom teacher to provide help or enrichment on a daily basis for each student.
  • Computers--Each classroom has four computer work stations that are part of the school's network. These computers are connected to the internet.  Instructional programs for reading, language arts, math, science, and social studies can be accessed from any computer in the building.  The library will be soon automated for checkout and for on-line card catalog.
  • Kindergarten Program--The kindergarten classes meet all day on the same schedule as the upper grades.  The  program is a developmentally sound program with an emphasis on learning in activity centers.  Prerequisite skills are practiced and learned using these hands-on-experiences. Formal instruction is given through the use of the McGraw Hill Kindergarten Reading Program. This program emphasises reading skills based on phoenemic awareness and phonics based instruction. This is the same series used in the upper grades enabling the students to make a smooth transition from kindergarten to first grade.

  • S.P.I.R.I.T--The SPIRIT program is for intellectually gifted students who score above the 90th percentile on the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children.  These students in grades 2-4 leave the regular classroom for 5 hours each week to work with the SPIRIT teacher in her classroom.  Students are eligible for testing after they have completed the first grade.

  •   Physical Education, Music, Library,  Counseling--All Sale students have these classes in addition to their regular class.  Third and fourth grade classes also have the services of an art teacher every third week. Columbus is fortunate to be able to offer these programs with specialists in each area to further the student's development.

  • Speech--Students are provided the services of a certified speech pathologist.  Students who need therapy for articulation, language, hearing impairment, fluency, and voice disorders are served according to individualized educational plans.

  • Accelerated Reader--Sale second, third, and fourth graders are the target grades for AR this school year.

  • Special Education--Eligible students K-4 are provided services in the Resource Room in areas of reading comprehension, reading readiness, math computation, spelling and math reasoning.
