ASSISTANT TEACHERS --Each kindergarten, first, and second grade has the services of a full-time assistant teacher.   The assistant teacher works under the direction of the classroom teacher to provide help or enrichment to students throughout the day.  All Assistant Teachers are highly trained in guided reading assistance. 

SPECIAL CLASS - Students attend Physical Education, Music, Library,  Computer, or Character Education at least once a week.    

COMPUTERS--Each classroom has four internet ready computer work stations. Instructional programs for reading, language arts, math, science, and social studies can be accessed from any computer in the building.  In addition to the classroom computers, Mitchell Elementary has a computer lab with twenty five workstations.  Students attend computer class once a week as an enrichment to classroom instruction.

S.P.I.R.I.T--The SPIRIT program is for intellectually gifted students who score above the 90th percentile on the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children.  These students in grades 2-4 leave the regular classroom for 5 hours each week to work with the SPIRIT teacher.

 

SPEECH--Students are provided the services of a certified speech pathologist.  Students who need therapy for articulation, language, hearing impairment, fluency, and voice disorders are served according to individualized educational plans.

READING ROCKS -- Starting in Kindergarten students participate in the Accelerated Reading Program.  Students work each nine-weeks to reach three reading goals.  Students celebrate their success with a variety of activities throughout the year.

RADKIDS - Students have the opportunity to participate in a kids personal safety education class.  MUW Police Officers volunteer to teach the program.  Mitchell Elementary School was the first school in Mississippi to implement this program during the school day.  For more information visit the radKids website at http://www.radkids.org

 

PARENT CENTER - Videos, books, games, test prep material, and computer access are a few of the resources available to parents.  Parents can check out the material to be used at home to help enrich learning at home.  Stop by today!!

ROBERT G. MAGBY MENTORING PROGRAM - Each year boys are selected to become mentors of our mentoring program.  Community leaders volunteer their time to spend with the boys at school and afterschool.
