In 1924 Mitchell Memorial Elementary School was erected by the City Board of School Directors in recognition of Professor William Isaac Mitchell in recognition of his work as teacher and principal, and leader in better race relationsips. Dr Mitchell was born in Columbus, Mississippi; his early education was private tuition by friends. He was a student at Alcorn A. and M.College, Mississippi 1872-1874; B.S., Central Mississippi College, Kosciusko, Mississippi.
In 1878 - 1916 he was the first Principal of Union Academy, the first public school established for African Americans in Columbus, MS.
Mitchell Elementary has served students from Kindergarten to Fifth Grade. Mitchell Elementary is currently a Kindergarten through Fourth Grade School serving 125 students.
