The Law and Public Safety course introduces students to professions in law enforcement, security, corrections, and fire and emergency management services. Students will examine the roles and responsibilties of police, courts, corrections, private security, and protective agencies of fire and emergency services. This course will also include the role of constitutional law, the United States legal system, criminal, law enforcement terminology, and the classification and elements of crime.

Careers students might prusue in this area include, police officer, correctional officer, firefighter, forensic science technician, fish and game warden, substance abuse counselor, emergency medical technician, private detective, parole and probation officer, park ranger.

Students will learn:

  1. How to write a traffic ticket.

  2. How to write a search/arrest warrant.

  3. Operate a two-wy radio.

  4. Different types of laws (criminal, civil, etc.).

  5. How to manage stress.

  6. About the apprehension, transportation and incarceration of suspects.

  7. How to respond to a crime in progress.

  8. How to conduct a low-risk and high-risk traffic stop.

  9. How to preserve a crime scene.

  10. How to collect evidence for forensics.

  11. Learn about criminal court proceedings.

  12. About the technology used in law enforcement.

Students will have the opportunity to earn the following certifications:

  1. First Aid

  2. CPR

  3. AED

  4. Fitness

  5. Handcuff

  6. Firearms safety

  7. FEMA Incident Command

The class meets for two periods and students may receive two-four credits towards graduation. In order to receive completer status, student must attend the 1st and 2nd year of the course. The class is limited to 30 students and requires an approved application. Applications may be picked up at the McKellar office in March or April for next year.
