Lee Middle School Introduces New Multimedia Courses The students and faculty of Lee Middle School will be introduced to the world of multimedia, audiovisual, and graphic design via new instructional equipment and programs that will be implemented this Fall. As part of an E2T2 Technology grant LMS was able to purchase equipment to create their own television studio equipped with a NewTek video production computer, high-tech cameras, lighting equipment, green-screen, three new MAC computers, digital cameras, and a scanner. Michael Jackson, choral director and certified computer instructor, will facilitate the new equipment and courses. Jackson states “this equipment will provide an innovative approach to learning and educating our students through the use of technology by offering students the opportunity to break away from traditional teaching methods that does not actively engage students in the learning process.” All teachers will have access to the new technology to enhance their curriculum and instruction. The new multimedia course will give students the opportunity to learn journalism skills, which will strengthen English skills, as well as teach them about the use and operations of cameras and studio equipment. The students enrolled in the course will create a weekly news broadcast that will air school wide. Students will learn camera operating skills, still photography skills, editing, and design. Sixteen students (see photo) participated in a multimedia camp on June 25-29 as an introduction to the multimedia class. Students were introduced to the equipment and brainstormed ideas for what they would like to include on their weekly program. Students spent the week creating a welcome video that will be shown to the entire school when school starts on August 7th. Jackson states “the students were very excited to be able to be involved in a new program that allow for hands-on learning that is instructional and fun at the same time.” The new graphic design course will give students the opportunity to learn and apply graphic design skills. Twenty-six students will work collaboratively throughout the year to create the yearbook using the new technology to design a unique yearbook.
