Seventh Grade Required Courses

Career Discovery

Career Discovery is designed to provide a variety of experiences and activities which promote self-awareness, career exploration, and educational planning related to the students educational and occupational plans. It focuses on the awareness of career choices and pathways to achieve individual career goals.

English English consists of the study of basic grammar and the development of writing skills. Emphasis is placed on the use of literature as a model for good writing. Students read novels to develop reading comprehension skills along with writing skills.
Integrated Science This course emphasizes four major strands: Life Science, Earth Science, Physical Science and Science skills. Throughout the teaching process, safety skills, scientific method processes, measuring, use of scientific and technological equipment, current events, environmental issues and hands-on activities will be emphasized.
Mathematics General mathematics and Pre-Algebra are offered. General mathematics is a course for mastery of mathematics skills. Pre-Algebra is a course designed to prepare students for Algebra I. Pre-requisites required for Pre-Algebra. One course required.
World Cultures History Seventh grade history emphasizes world history and geography from 500 A.D. to 1750 A.D., in particular the social, cultural, and technological changes which occurred during this period.
 

Eighth Grade Required Courses

Computer Discovery Computer Discovery provides fundamental skills in the operation of microcomputers. Real world applications in word processing, keyboarding, graphics, database, telecommunications, spreadsheets, and desktop publishing are emphasized. Students receive a carnegie unit upon successful completion of this course.
English English consists of the study of composition, spelling, listening, reading, oral communication, and grammar with an emphasis on effective application of these skills. Literature will be used to reinforce concepts which develop reading, thinking, and writing skills, and foster an appreciation for the written language. Strong emphasis is place on independent reading.
Science Science emphasizes four major strands: Life Science, Earth Science, Physical Science, and Science skills. Mathematics General Math, Pre-Algebra, Transition to Algebra and Algebra I are offered. General math is for students who need more skills in the basic functions of mathematics. Pre-Algebra is a course designed to prepare students for success in Algebra I. Algebra I covers topics in advanced equations, graphing, number theory, and problem-solving and is available for those students who have been successful in pre-algebra. One course required.
American History This is the student's first major course in American History. United States history to 1877 emphasizes events and great movements that contributed to the building of the United States of America. Emphasis is placed on major events which have occurred in the past and problems which Americans have solved.

Elective Courses

Beginner Band Beginner Band is offered to students who are taking band for the first time. The basic fundamentals of rhythm, note value, and tone production are taught after students choose and purchase an instrument. To participate, students must make an acceptable score on the music aptitude test, have satisfactory academic grades and be interviewed by the band director.
Advanced Band This class is designed for 8th grade students who have had at least one year of band experience. In addition to classroom instruction, students may participate in solo and ensemble festivals, band contests, clinics, and football game performances.
"Showtime" Show Choir The LMS Show Choir is the "song and dance" show group. Members are chosen each spring through a rigorous audition process. Students must exhibit exceptional ability in singing and dancing and must express a sincere desire to be dedicated to the group. The show choir's repertoire consists of music from the Jazz, Pop, Rock, and Broadway eras. This is a performing group that participates in several activities during the year including fundraisers and concerts. Students are required to purchase performance attire. This course is designed for 7th and 8th grade students. Potential students have to audition for this class.
LMS Girlchoir This course focuses on advanced musical techniques utilized in a two-part choral setting. Students are required to memorize and perform many styles of SA and SSAA music. This is a performing group that participates in several activities during the year including fundraisers and concerts. This course is designed for 7th and 8th grade female students. Potential students have to audition for this class.

Multimedia Projects

(Graphic Design/Audiovisual Production)

This course is designed to provide students hands-on training using audio and video creation equipment (camcorders, digital cameras, scanners, and digital audio). Techniques learned in this class will be utilized to design and produce the LMS Yearbook and the W-LMS Student News Program. Students in this class will be required to attend after-school meetings, sporting and extracurricular events in order to photograph/video these events. 1 Semester

Art The students are taught basic design and technique of two and three-dimensional artwork as well as cartoon drawing, crayon, tempera paint and pencil drawings. Simple calligraphy and the history of art are also introduced.
Achieve 3000/TeenBiz TeenBiz is a Web-based literacy program that utilizes the five step process that improves vocabulary, comprehension and reading fluency, as well as writing skills. Students read non-fiction articles on the computer that match their reading levels and then test based on those comprehension of the articles. Higher performing students are challenged by higher level syntax and vocabulary and enjoy the relevant, authentic activities that use email, technology, and current events. This course is designed for 7th & 8th grade students.
Health Education This course offers the students a chance to learn about personal health, family health, consumer health, and environmental health. Physical fitness, communicable diseases, drug abuse and safety will be emphasized.
Physical Education Physical Education is designed to improve the overall physical fitness of the students and to increase their knowledge of sports, games, rules, and strategies. Specific sports covered in the course include volleyball, basketball, floor hockey, badminton, and softball.
Elective Spanish !Bienvenidos! This class is a middle school course where students receive an introduction to Spanish. They will learn common greetings, numbers, telling time, seasons, days of the week, months, and other subject areas. They will begin to investigate holidays culture, and some historical facts about the Southern and Central Hispanic countries. The language will be taught using games, arts & crafts, oral communications, and hard work. !Buenas seurtes!
Spanish I !Buen Viaje! A Spanish I class where students will learn a new language, culture, and history. Some areas covered are Hispanic holidays, ways of life, locations of countries (Southern & Central) and some historial tidbits. The language will be taught using games, arts & crafts, oral communications, primary readers, and hard work. !Buenas seurtes!
SPIRIT A course for intellectually gifted seventh and eighth grade students, in which students are screened and tested to determine eligibility. The course emphasizes thinking skills, creativity, research skills, leadership skills, communication skills, and group dynamics. Students enhance problem-solving and group cooperation skills through completing the COPE course (Challenging Outdoor Personal Experience) at Camp Seminole in Starkville, MS. Students also have the opportunity to participate in Destination Imagination, an international creative problem-solving competition.
