Language Arts
Second grade students enhance knowledge in the language arts through
standards-based, arts integrated instruction. Students explore the processes
involved in writing when composing journal entries, letter writing,
informational and narrative paragraphs, as well as correct editing procedures.
Phonetic rules, comprehension techniques for a variety of text forms
including both fiction and non-fiction passages, and vocabulary extension
are learned as students progress toward reading grade level selections
fluently. Students also gain knowledge and practice in appropriate listening
and speaking behaviors during classroom participation and theatrical
productions.
Math
The second grade mathematics curriculum is aligned with state standards.
Students gain an understanding of skills such as addition and subtraction,
time, money, two and three dimensional shapes, measurement, and beginning
algebraic concepts. The arts are integrated throughout the progression
of lessons using manipulatives to support the learning of mathematics
concepts.
Science
Second grade science instruction addresses the standards for science,
which include physical, life, and earth science, as well as, investigation
with experimentation. Outdoor and indoor areas are used as laboratories
for learning. When using the scientific method, students learn to make
predictions and then test them. Students gain understanding by creating
and constructing models of various scientific concepts. The arts a’e
infused in a variety of ways to enhance scientific knowledge.
Social Studies
Cook second graders participate in social studies through its integration
into reading, language arts, and spelling. They learn about people’s
achievements (past and present), map skills, community, and the importance
of individual citizenship, actions, and character. Using visual and
performing arts, students demonstrate their knowledge gained through
social studies and the world around them.
Creative Movement
Second grade students continue to explore axial, locomotor, and non-locomotor
movement while adding the use and experimentation of direction and pathways.
They develop composition skills by applying improvisation and call and
response techniques as stated in the state adopted dance frameworks.
The creative experience is further explored through the use of individual
and group activities. These creative compositions become set movement
phrases and sequences. The students identify movement terminology and
use it correctly when discussing movement. They continue to work on
the understanding of movement’s role in their daily lives and
its relation to other subject areas.
Music
Second grade students refine their understanding of music concepts with
emphasis on singing in tune and on pitch, using simple music vocabulary,
and recognizing rhythmic and pitch notation. Students analyze form and
styles in music. The students listen to, respond, and interpret musical
selections from diverse cultures as stated in the state adopted music
frameworks. Students begin to improvise and create music using voices
and/or instruments.
Visual Art
Students use varied materials to create original artwork. Using the
state adopted art frameworks as a basis, they begin to classify art
by medium, subject, and purpose. The students learn to critique artwork
of their own as well as others, including community and famous artists
using the elements of design and appropriate grade level vocabulary.
Theatre
Second grade students learn to imitate and discuss, in detail, the world
and the people around them. They learn about storytelling and dramatic
structure by creating sequential dialogue and actions in their improvisations
as stated in the state adopted theatre standards. Second-graders add
language concepts to their theatre vocabulary such as character, plot,
setting, and theme, and start learning how to analyze performances.
They develop body awareness and spatial perception through pantomime
and sensory awareness of all five senses. They continue to be exposed
to different cultures through performance, and begin to discuss those
differences. They make connections from theatre to other subject areas
and everyday life. All second graders practice appropriate performance
and audience etiquette.
Physical Education
Second Grade Physical Education at Cook Elementary is filled with movement,
music, and FUN! It is a planned sequential program of instruction incorporating
individual and group activities, which are student centered and age
appropriate. Students develop movement skills through participation
in games and fitness activities while gaining experiences for social
and personal development.
Students also demonstrate acceptable behaviors for the physical activity
setting. Safe practices, classroom rules, and procedures are prominent
issues. They learn the concepts of cooperation through small group activities
involving sharing equipment and space. Our curriculum is based on state
Physical Education and Health framework and reinforces some of the cognitive
skills taught in the classroom. Movements become more challenging as
the students move from one grade to the next and develop more mature
skills. With a wealth of equipment available, we are able to place our
emphasis on FUN and self-challenges rather than peer challenges.
