Language Arts
The kindergarten language arts program focuses on phenomic awareness, vocabulary development, speaking, listening, writing, and beginning reading skills. Students learn these skills through an integration of visual and performing arts. Student interaction is the motivation for student success.

Math
Kindergarten math introduces students to basic math concepts through the use of manipulatives. Students learn numerals, shapes, patterns, and simple addition and subtraction. Music, movement, and art experiences are included to enhance the math curriculum.

Social Studies
Kindergarten social studies introduces people, events, and ideas that influence history through the use of visual and performing arts. Students experience the concepts of courage, self-control, justice, leadership, and individual responsibility.

Science
Kindergarten students use a variety of visual and performing arts to explore the concepts of life, earth, and physical science. The use of hands-on activities offers students opportunities to explore their world creatively while supporting the state science curriculum.

Creative Movement
Kindergarten students explore the basic elements of dance creatively through different movement exercises. These basic exercises allow students to explore axial, locomotor, and non-locomotor movement, personal and general space, along with high, medium and low levels according to state adopted dance frameworks. The students also learn the historical and cultural aspects of dance, as well as the role it plays in their daily lives. Students are introduced to audience and performer etiquette and demonstrate these skills. Everyone works individually and with their peers to further explore the concepts of dance being introduced, and to enhance their movement experience.

Music

They sing independently as well as with others and recite rhymes/chants. Students develop skills of listening, playing percussion instruments and use appropriate music vocabulary.

Stdi are introduced to Art History and the concept of art as a mode of self expression as explained in the state adopted art frameworks. Students learn the use and care of art tools and materials.

Theatre
Kindergarten students utilize their inherent sense of play and imagination to tell stories as they investigate the world and the people who inhabit it. They explore their feelings and emotions and learn to feel “safe” on stage by presenting their stories before an audience of their peers. The students play theatre games to develop the basic acting skills of concentration, expression and perception as stated in the state adopted theatre standards. They gain an understanding of audience and performance etiquette and speak about the meaning and mood of stories and performances. They also begin to develop self-awareness and confidence as they practice best speech and movement techniques. With this introduction, students have a new set of tools that enhance other learning experiences.

Physical Education
Kindergarten Physical Education at Cook Elementary is filled with movement, music, and FUN! It is a planned sequential program of instruction incorporating individual and group activities, which are student centered and age appropriate. Students develop movement skills through participation in games and fitness
-activities while gaining experiences for social and personal development.
Students also demonstrate acceptable behaviors for the physical activity setting. Safe practices, classroom rules, and procedures are prominent issues. They learn the concepts of cooperation through small group activities involving sharing equipment and space. Our curriculum is based on state Physical Education and Health framework and reinforces some of the cognitive skills taught in the classroom. Movements become more challenging as the students move from one grade to the next and develop more mature skills. With a wealth of equipment available, we are able to place our emphasis on FUN and self-challenges rather than peer challenges.
