First Grade Art Intergration Lessons

Language Arts
Language Arts consists of learning phonics, phonemic awareness, fluency, comprehension, and vocabulary. Students learn to blend and segment words. They begin to identify elements of a story and write clear and complete sentences. The students learn to spell by looking at the letters, naming the letters, finding letter patterns, and writing the letters to form a word. Students master vowel sounds, consonant blends, silent consonahts, and related words. Fine arts are incorporated through song, poetry, theater, and movement.

Social Science
First grade students learn science and social studies through’the theme of a “child’s place in time and space”. Students-learn physical, life, and earth science through investigation and experimentation. The classroom becomes a model of society as students examine the geographic and economic aspects of life in their world and time, and compare them to those of people who came before them. Social science standards are a focus of the first grade curriculum and utilize elements of the arts.

Math
First grade students learn number sense, measurement, geometry, statistics and probability, and mathematical reasoning through the district adopted math program. They learn concrete and abstract mathematical concepts through a variety of approaches. Students use projects, manipulatives, and visual and performing arts in every area of mathematics. They develop a daily routine of graphing and solving everyday problems.

Creative Movement
First grade students review and explore the elements of movement learned during the previous year. They begin to experiment with isolating body parts and developing control. Students work alone and with partners to create movement compositions that explore and demonstrate knowledge of space, time, and energy as stated in the state adopted dance frameworks. Cultural and historical dances are explored. Students identify the differences between the movement they perform in class and see in everyday life. They also begin to make connections between movement and other subject areas in which they participate.

Music
Students in first grade explore the basic elements of music: melody, beat, rhythm, form, and timbre as stated in the state adopted music frameworks. They receive opportunities for solo and group participation, singing, listening, and movement. Students begin creating and performing music using simple melodic and rhythmic patterns on pitched and un-pitched musical instruments. Music vocabulary is increased through classroom participation.

Visual Art
Students expand compositional skills through further study of the elements of design such as line, color, shape, form, texture, and space following the state adopted art framework. They learn to use familiar tools in new ways broadening the methods of artistic expression. The use of art in society is explored as students begin to compare and contrast historical works of art. Common art vocabulary is infused into classroom activities.

Theatre
First grade students further develop their set of dramatic tools in more detailed imitations of the world around them as stated in the state adopted theatre standards. They discover their voice and body as theatrical tools. Students actively plan both individual and group performances by arranging their environments for creative play and utilizing technical theatre elements such as props, costumes, and scenery. First graders develop improvisational skills that enable them to spontaneously and creatively respond to problem solving situations. They begin to recite poems and other written material and use music and movement. Students build on the basic theatre vocabulary learned in kindergarten and use it to discuss both live and recorded performances. They view a variety of performance styles and discuss meaning, theatrical elements, and individual preferences. All first graders practice appropriate performance etiquette and good audience behavior in professional venues as well as during the performances of their peers.

Physical Education
First grade Physical Education at Cook Elementary is filled with movement, music, and FUN! It is a planned sequential program of instruction incorporating individual and group activities, which are student centered and age appropriate. Students develop movement skills through participation in games and fitness activities while gaining experiences for social and personal development.
Students also demonstrate acceptable behaviors for the physical activity setting. Safe practices, classroom rules, and procedures are prominent issues. Theylearn the concepts of cooperation through small group activities involving sharing equipment and space. Our curriculum is based on state Physical Education and Health framework and reinforces some of the cognitive skills taught in the classroom. Movements become more challenging as the students move from one grade to the next and develop more mature skills. With a wealth of equipment available, we are able to place our emphasis on FUN and selfchallenges rather than peer challenges.
