Topic: Dropout Prevention
Parents will be split into groups of 24. Groups will alternate through the Choice Bus presentation on the choice bus then the Project 2020 presentation in the board room.

- 6:10 pm – 7:30 pm - Mattie C. Stewart “Choice Bus”

Parents will have the opportunity to learn the startling facts about dropout by taking part in the “Choice Bus” presentation.
The Choice Bus is designed to take students through a 25-minute interactive presentation designed to show the relevancy of education to career choices and lifetime earning potential. Midway through the presentation, a full scale replica of a prison cell is revealed. It’s a powerful demonstration of how education—and the lack of education—is connected to making good or bad choices. During the presentation, The Choice Bus staff leads students in discussions about the importance of education, choosing friends wisely, avoiding gangs, being respectful to others and having a career interest. Students learn several eye-opening facts about education.
- 6:10 pm – 7:30 pm - Columbus School District Project 2020 Dropout Prevention Program
- Dr. Martha Liddell will discuss how Project 2020 is working to create an educated workforce by preparing people to take full advantage of the college and career opportunities that await them.
The Columbus School District Parent Academy serves parents and families of the Columbus Municipal School District. It is a community-driven initiative designed to provide educational resources to help parents and caring adults become engaged in their child’s education.
Studies have shown that consistent parental involvement is a major factor in determining a student’s academic success. Columbus School District Parent Academy offers families FREE educational opportunities designed to help students succeed AND help parents attain their personal and professional goals.
Columbus School District Parent Academy will host a variety of workshops that address the issues that are important to parents and families.

There are two key areas of focus for CSDPA workshops:
• Helping parents and family members support children’s learning and development.
• Helping parents and family members increase their personal capacity in a specific area.

Who can attend CSDPA workshops?
The term “Parent” is used in the broadest sense. It refers to any caring adult in the life of a child, including grandparents, neighbors, agency workers, educators and others who play a significant role supporting children.

What is the purpose of the CSDPA?
The CSPA strives to deliver high-quality learning opportunities designed to engage and educate parents. It endeavors to build the skills and capacity of parents and families to achieve personal, educational and economic success, resulting in a stronger, healthier community. Additionally, studies have shown that when parents are engaged in learning activities, it has a positive impact on their child’s academic performance.

Where are CSDPA Workshops held?
CSDPA workshops are conducted monthly at the Brandon Central Services Parent Center. Workshops will typically be no longer than an hour and a half. Topics and presenters will vary. A complete workshop guide will be published before each scheduled workshop.
